The Volga River
The Volga River, flowing in the western part of Russia, is famous for its length, and width. It is one of the most important rivers in Russia. The people living on either side in its length believe that the river is more than just a trade and transport route. They call the river Volga Matushka (Matushka means Mother in Russian) because has played a great role in the history, culture, and lifestyle of the European Russians.
The Volga River has its beginnings in the Valdai Hills located near Moscow in the northwest. First the river flows east passing by Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod. Then it turns south near Kazan. Its journey ends in the Caspian Sea by creating a big delta near Astrakhan. Most of the length of the river is navigable as well.
One of the oldest mentions of the river was by the Greek geographer and writer Ptolemy, who mentioned the Ra River (as the Volga River was known inAncient Greece) in his book called the Geography.
The importance of the Volga River dates back to the ancient times. During the 1st century AD, the river was used for trade and transport by the Slavics, the Bulgars and the Khazars who settled in different parts of the Volga basin. Russian states were formed and there was an increase in agriculture of wheat and other crops along the river basin.
During World War II, Hitler considered the Volga River to have great significance for his war against the USSR. He had planned to block Volga routes to weaken the Russian army. But the Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942-2 February 1943) destroyed the German Sixth Army.

A. They offer to take you on a mission to the “red planet” in the InteractoriumMars-Terraforming in the All-Russian Exhibition Center. There kids cancontrol a Mars land rover, explore the surface of the planet and the mineralsfound on it, and choose their meal schedule on the Martian station. You canalso visit the Space Museum where kids will find out interesting facts aboutlife on a space station and see what astronauts eat where there is no gravity.They play films about space on the dome ceiling at the Moscow Planetariumand after the show it’s worth stopping by the interactive exhibition atLunarium and taking a ride on a space bike.

B. At Buratino-Pinocchio Museum, kids look for the Golden Key in a pond alongwith the famous characters from these stories, look for a way out of a closet,visit Malvina, and play a role in a real show. In Zhili -Bili fairy tale house,kids turn into characters from Russian fairy tales, climb through a “burning”oven, and wear a tunic with a belt.

C. There are four Moscow water parks: Qwa-Qwa Park in Mytischi, theCarribean in Perovo (Eastern Administrative Okrug), Fantasy Park inMaryino, and Moreon in Yasenevo. In all of the waterparks there are extremewater slides, fun towns for kids, wave pools, and spa zones with saunas. Alsoopen to visitors in Moscow there are the pools of outdoor complexes Lujnikiand Olympiysky, where famous athletes have set world records.

D. Year round in the largest parks of Moscow you will find entertainment for thewhole family: in winter they offer skiing courses, ice rinks, and slides and inthe summer they have boat docks, and bicycle courses. The parks alsoorganize festivities, such as Maslenitsa or the city’s birthday. You should takea walk in at least one of them, for example Gorky Park or Park Sokolniki, inthe Vorobyev Hills or Museon, in Fili Culture and Recreation Park orKuzminki, Bauman Garden or the Hermitage garden.
